Pieces of Me
I have always loved to shop and all it takes is one look into my closet to confirm it. I was used to having so much space for all of my clothes, shoes and accessories until I downsized from a house to a high-rise apartment. Even though I had the same square footage there was only one not so large walk in closet. I had to figure out how to make the most of every ounce of that closet space all the way up to the ceiling and there still wasn’t enough room. I ended up having to purchase large bins to pack my out of season wardrobe into so it could be put into storage. Talk about a hassle! Living in Dallas, TX it can be spring one day and winter the next so it was not ideal to have my wardrobe so spread out. Every 4-6 months I would be dragging those bins up and down the elevator to change out the clothes based on the season.
This went on for about 4 years until I lost 25 pounds by cleaning up my diet and working out (more on that in the Fitness Section). Getting ready for a night out became very frustrating because everything I would put on was too big – I know- it sounds ridiculous to be frustrated over that but when you are trying to look nice for an event and you have a closest bursting with clothes and nothing fits…frustrating.
One day I had just had enough so I went into my closet and tried on every single piece of clothing. If it didn’t fit I was going to either get rid of it or have it altered. That ended up being about 75% of my closet and that was going to take a lot of money to replace. I had used consignment stores in the past but never made much money and if I had to buy a whole new wardrobe that was not going to work for me.
I had heard about a resale apps where you post pictures and descriptions of your gently worn clothes and when someone makes a purchase (buyer pays for shipping) the app emails you a postage paid label, you pack up the item and ship it out. Whatever money you make from your sale (the apps keep 19%-20% of each sale) can be directly deposited into your checking account. That sounded great to me!
I got busy washing, ironing, taking pictures and researching every item to see what it originally cost so I could determine how to price for resale-luckily I shop primarily online so I still have all of my email receipts. When I started uploading items into the app, people started buying as fast as I was loading! It was a bit overwhelming at first but once I got the process down it was kind of fun. I made great money quickly and was able to replace my wardrobe. I was also able to find and purchase some of my favorite items on the app in my new size.
If you have some nice items lying around and you don’t know what to do with them – I highly recommend that you check out the Poshmark App – if you join using code NONSTOPBELLA you will get $5 towards your first purchase!
